SUNDAY

“Plot to Kill - Plot to Discredit”

Psalm 95:6

Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;

GOD'S WORD: John 11: 45-57

Paraphrase

The religious leaders fearing the magnitude of what Jesus had done in raising Lazarus from the dead considered how all the people coming to faith in Jesus would lead to Rome taking away their position, power and nation.

This led to Caiaphas, the high priest that year, prophesying that it would be better for Jesus to die for the people than for the nation of Israel to perish under the hand of Rome because of all the commotion occurring due to Jesus' miracles.

Not saying this on his own, Caiaphas prophesized that Jesus would die for the entire nation of Israel, including those of Israel who were scattered, to order to unite them. His saying this led to their plotting to take Jesus life from that point on.

Jesus could therefore no longer move at will among the Jews and withdrew to Ephraim near the desert where he and his disciples stayed.

When time came for the Passover and the ceremonial cleansing in Jerusalem they began wondering if Jesus would dare come to the Feast since the religious leaders had given orders to report any sightings of him so they could arrest him.

LORD, may the Power of the Resurrection be revealed in the lives of believers so that those trying to discredit the Resurrection will always be faced with its power in the world today.

GOD'S BLESSING (Romans 12:9-17)

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

WTTW: GOD'S WORD

SUNDAY: “Tell & Show”

Psalm 95:6

Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;

GOD'S WORD: John 11: 38-45

Paraphrase

Coming to the tomb where Lazarus had been for four days riled up Jesus' anger over death to the point he told them to remove the stone covering the entrance to the tomb.

Martha cautioned Jesus against doing this since her brother’s decomposing body having been in the tomb for four dayS would give off a putrid odor.

Reminding Martha she had been told if she believed he was the resurrection and the life she would see the glory of God, Jesus had the stone removed as he looked up to heaven thanking his Father for always hearing him - thanking Him publically so those present would believe he was the Son of God when they witnessed what was about to happen.

Calling in a loud voice for Lazarus to come out of the tomb, he walked out covered with the burial cloth twisted and turned around his entire face and body prompting Jesus to tell them to remove Lazarus’ burial clothes so he could be set free.

Many of the Jews who had come from Jerusalem to Bethany to mourn with Mary and Martha placed their faith in Jesus upon witnessing this while other Jews responded by telling the Pharisees what had happened. This led to a meeting of the Sanhedrin where the religious leaders expressed fear that as more and more people believed in Jesus they would fall into disfavor with Rome and end up losing their religious status and power.

LORD, we thank You for these witnesses the Apostle John has provided to us so that we are able to see and believe.

LORD, we ask that Your Spirit help us to be prepared as Witnesses to tell those who have questions about who Your Son is and What he has done and the difference this makes in the world and our lives.

Paraphrase

By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days and that Martha and Mary were being comforted by many Jews who had come the short distance from Jerusalem to their home. Upon hearing that Jesus was coming, Martha ran to meet him saying, “Lord if you had come right after getting the message my brother was ill he wouldn’t have died although I believe that even now God will give you anything you ask.”

When Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise again she told him she believed her brother would rise in the resurrection at the end of times. However, when Jesus asked her if she believed if He was the resurrection and the life and whoever believed in him would live and never die, Martha confessed her faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God who had come into the world.

After her confession, Martha returned home and told Mary that Jesus had arrived and was asking for her at which point Mary quickly went to him and fell at his feet saying, Lord if you had immediately come my brother wouldn’t have died.”

Upon seeing Mary and the Jews who had come to comfort her weeping, Jesus, being emotionally moved through his entire being asked where Lazarus had been buried. When they showed him, He wept. Seeing this, some of the Jews remarked how much Jesus loved Lazarus while others complained that while he had given sight to a man born blind he couldn’t keep his friend from dying.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. These bodies of ours are constantly facing death just as Jesus did; so it is clear to all it is only the living Christ within [who keeps us safe].

GOD'S WORD: John 11: 1-16

Paraphrase

As Lazarus lay sick in Bethany his sisters Mary and Martha sent word of this to Jesus. When their message arrived, although he loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus, Jesus didn’t immediately leave for Bethany telling his disciples that Larazus’ illness wouldn’t end in death and instead would glorify both God and His Son.

Two days later Jesus told his disciples to get ready to leave for Judea. When his disciples reminded him how recently the Jews had tried stoning him for calling them hired hands and wolves, Jesus told them they have nothing to fear when they are walking in the light within God’s will as opposed to walking in the dark out of step with God’s will and purpose.

When Jesus told his disciples that Lazarus was sleeping and he was going to Bethany to wake him up, the disciples took him literally, thinking he meant Lazarus was naturally asleep instead of figuratively asleep as in being dead and so they told Jesus that sleep was good for Lazarus and would restore him to health.

Jesus cleared up the disciple’s confusion by telling them Lazarus was dead dead and that what’s more he was glad he wasn’t present when Lazarus died so that they too would believe He was the Son of God. Thomas told the rest of the disciples they should all follow Jesus to Judea and be ready to meet the fate that awaits him there – death.
