God's Blessing: 2 Corinthians 4:8-10
We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. These bodies of ours are constantly facing death just as Jesus did; so it is clear to all it is only the living Christ within [who keeps us safe].
Go with this Assurance. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

"SEEN THROUGH LIGHT"
PARAPHRASE
When the disciples asked Jesus if the cause of a man’s blindness was either his or his parent’s sin Jesus told them the man was born blind so that God’s work would be visible in his life. He told them they were to do the work of God who sent him as the light of the world while he was here because when he was crucified they wouldn’t be able to do the work of God during that time.
Picking up clay and spitting in it, Jesus blessed the man as he applied the mud to his eyes before then telling him to wash it off in the Pool of Siloam. After doing this he was able to see.
Those who knew him started questioning if he was really the blind beggar. Some thought he wasn’t stating that he only looked like him. However, he proclaimed that he was the blind beggar. And when they asked him how he was able to see he told them what Jesus had done and said and how he had followed his instructions. When they asked him where Jesus was he told them he didn’t know.

SUNDAY
GOD'S WORD: "Freedom in Jesus, Not Tradition"
John 8:31-59
PARAPHRASE
When Jesus told those who had believed him that by embracing his teaching they were his disciples and would know the truth which sets them free, they told him as Abraham’s descendents they didn’t need to be set free because they have never been anyone’s slaves.
Jesus told them that anyone who sins is a slave to sin and unlike a slave who has no place in the family, a son has a permanent place. Therefore whoever is set free of sin by the Son of God is part of God’s family. He told them even though he knew their ancestral father was Abraham they weren’t acting like it by wanting to kill him for saying he was the light of the world as instructed by his Father to do and how instead of basing their actions on what he was telling them they were doing so based on what their father the devil was telling them.
When they claim Abraham as their father a second time, Jesus tells them if they were really his descendents they would do what he did instead of trying to kill the one God sent into the world to tell the truth about the light of the world. He told them Abraham didn’t reject God the way they are and didn’t follow the devil the way they are. Rejecting what he said, they claimed not to be illegitimate children and claimed their only Father was God, not the devil.
Jesus told them that if God were their Father they would love him because God was the one who sent him. He told them the reason they don’t believe what he says is because their father is the devil. The devil being a murderer, having no truth in him and speaking his native language of lies, he told them they want to carry out the desires of their father instead. Jesus tells them that whoever belongs to God hears what He has to say and therefore the reason they are unable to grasp the truth of what he has been telling them is because they do not belong to God.
When they tried to discredit Jesus by asking him if he was a Samaritan and demon possessed, he told them he wasn’t demon-possessed and that while he honors his Father they are dishonoring him by what they are calling him. He told them that while he wasn’t seeking self glory the One who does is the judge of the world. Jesus told them whoever obeys his word will live forever.
Offended, they renewed their accusations that Jesus was demon-possessed stating that despite Abraham and the prophets dying he claimed anyone who believed his word would never die. They asked him who he thought he was and if he thought he was greater than Abraham or the prophets?
Jesus responded by telling them self-glory means nothing in contrast to glory from his Father who they claim as their God and even though they don’t know the Father, he does and if he said he didn’t when he did he would be lying like they do. He told them how their father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing the day he came.
While they pronounced wonderment at his not being 50 years old and yet having seen Abraham, Jesus told them that he was in existence before Abraham was even born at which point they picked up stones to stone him although he hid himself and slipped away from the temple grounds.

Paraphrase
Jesus told the people he is the light of the world and therefore anyone who follows him will never be left in the darkness and death caused by their sin because when they come into his presence they will enter into the light that gives light.
When the Pharisees challenged what he said telling him anyone making such an outlandish claim thinking they can validate it merely by saying so - on the basis of of their own testimony is irrational, Jesus tells them that even though the Law requires the testimony of two witnesses to validate a claim, this human standard doesn’t apply to him because of who he is indicating they are unaware of where he came from and where he is going. Furthermore, Jesus tells the Pharisees the claims he makes are valid and true because they are made in conjunction with the Father who in sending him serves as another witness to who he is.
When the Pharisees asked Jesus where his father was he responded by telling them if they knew who he was they would know his Father but in denying him they deny knowledge of who the Father is as well. In speaking these words in the temple area where offerings are made to God, Jesus foreshadowed that instead how he as God would soon be offering his life for the world instead - although since the time for this had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
Jesus told them once more how he would be leaving them, they would look for him but not find him and end up in the dark dying in their sin. After saying this, the Jews still confused about his heavenly origin, thought he was talking about killing himself.
Contrasting his coming from heaven above rather than being from the world below, Jesus told them he was not of this world and again told them they would die in their sin if they didn't believe he was the light of the world.
When they asked again who he was he repeated once more he was who he claimed to be - the one telling the world what he has heard the Father say; the one judging those who reject the “I am”.
Not understanding what he had said about the Father, Jesus told them that when they crucify him they will know who claimed to be, that he only acted in obedience with the Father's will and that his Father has been with him at all times.
Many people put their faith in him at that time.

PREPARATION
"Elements"
To participate in the Lord’s Supper you will need a piece of bread & a small cup of juice or wine.
"Heart"
The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 says, “Therefore, whoever eats and drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
PRAISE

LORD’S SUPPER
In the night in which he was betrayed,

WORSHIP THRU THE WORD
"The 4 R'S"
John 8:1-11
Paraphrase
Jesus returned to the Temple the next day and while he was teaching the people the religious leaders brought a woman caught in adultery to him.
Placing her center stage and reminding him that the Law of Moses commands them to stone her they asked Jesus how he thought they should handle the situation hoping to accuse him of breaking the Law.
When he ignored them and wrote on the ground with his finger they asked him again at which point he told them whoever was without sin should throw the first stone at her.
After saying this as he went back to writing on the ground the religious leaders left one by one until Jesus was alone with the woman.
Standing up Jesus asked her where the accusers had gone and if any one had condemned her to which she replied no.
Jesus responded by telling her he also did not condemned her and that she should move on in her life and change the way she has been living.
I. John told his first century readers that
Jesus challenged the religious leaders' motives and hearts when they tried to use the Law to trap him by condemning an adulterous woman.
II. How did Jesus challenge the motives and hearts of the religous leaders?
III. Jesus had them:
1. Reiterate (what they said to him)
2. Reflect (on what they said to him)
3. Reconsider (what they said to him)
4. Release (the woman from their condemnation)
IV. John tells us today that Jesus challenges the motives and hearts of the self-righteous when they try to use the Gospel to trap and condemn sinners.
V. How does Jesus challenge the motives and hearts of the self-righteous?
VI. Jesus has them:
1. Reiterate (what they are saying)
2. Reflect (on what they are saying)
3. Reconsider (what they are saying)
4. Release (those they are condemning)
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Forgive us when we use You, when we use Your Son, when we use Your Good News to trap You - to put You in a box, to limit Your Amazing Grace in any way, shape or form.
Forgive us when we use Your Good
News to condemn rather than to forgive.
We give You praise that You give us the opportunity to hear what we are saying by making us repeat ourself outloud.
We thank you for guiding us to rethink and reconsider what we are saying and doing in light of who Your Son is and what he has done.
We praise You for releasing others from condemnation as You have released us through the grace that comes Jesus
Christ our Lord and Savior in whose name we pray.
